What not to say to someone who is depressed

Depression is quite a serious business and those who haven't suffered can only imagine what the sufferer goes through.  If you have been reading my blog you will have seen that I believe there are many many things you can do to help yourself but one thing that really does not help is listening, even for a second, to the stupid comments that others make when they learn that you are depressed.

If you've ever been depressed you know what it feels like.  The stupid sentences that people give you that shows they don't understand what it means to be depressed and they don't realize the seriousness of it.

I just read a really really interesting article and I wanted to share it with you.  It talks about all these kind of things that make you mad if you're depressed.  It just shows that others don't understand at all and what's more they are not prepared to even try.

The article is called 11 things you should never say to someone with depression.

Please let me know what you think about the article and leave your comments below.

  3. The article '11 things you should never say to someone with depression' really resonated with me. As a person who suffered in my twenties and thirties, I have had a lot of those things said to me. The things that were said to me only made things worse. Thankfully, I have learned techniques and things that I can do to alleviate when I have a relapse. I know I will be ok now.

I do have a question for you-

I think it would be really here really helpful for my readers if you could expand on your comments above and let us know what techniques and things you do to alleviate depression when you have a relapse. I think this would really really help other people.

  7. Great post! You're very right, listening to unproductive comments does not help in the least.

  8. Nice post! But I think there should be difference between people with different temperament, for example the sanguine and the melancholist have different perspective of "depression". So we couldn't generalize those 11 things, instead we should also look up for the temperament and culture. Different place different culture, that one is more suitable for american I guess.

  9. Interesting article. I must say while it's true just saying that "other people are suffering worse" is a bad idea for depression advice, it is a good idea for insufferably pessimistic people.

This advice, to remember there are others doing worse, is probably best used for those people who complain about minor hiccups and problems in their life while not being grateful for all the good they do have.

    I don't know...just a thought.

  18. Hi Karl,
I left a comment here yesterday, but as I wasn't logged in, it disappeared :)
I found your blog while googling and I liked your posts. I have some friends who have been depressed for a while, and your post and the link that you've given in it, got me thinking. While I couldn't believe that there are people who'd tell a depressed person to commit suicide, most of the "what-not-to-says" are said all the time. The question is - what should you say then? It's a tough call...? I guess every depressed person would have different expectations.

Thanks for your insightful and relevant articles.

    Regards,
    Shafali

  19. Hey Karl,
Hey great post!!! I know exactly what you mean on the stupid stuff people say when someone is depressed. It's actually kind of annoying. the phrases are so cliche now that it does more harm than good. When I use to smoke, the biggest annoyance I had with people was when they would say "Don't you know that is bad for you?" or "Don't you know that causes xyz?" Of course I knew that?!! I am a smoker (or was). After hearing it so many times it causes problems and I think the same goes with this. You hear it so much, it's just better to listen and give advice when asked. The stuff on that list I would never say to a depressed person. Anyway, good post!!

  20. Nowadays most people are so stress and mess up because of their busy schedules and unhealthy lifestyle. That's why it is no surprised for us that sometimes people commit suicide because of depression. Thanks for sharing this.

  21. Hi Karl

I read the post. I think there are stages of being upset. Being in depression is the extreme stage. Usually when says "I am depressed"..he/she is just little too upset and not depressed as such. Because I saw one person who was genuinely depressed. He could not get angry when people commented on him. He was helpless with no capacity to revolt or react back. It was almost a gone case. Later, he was helped by many professionals and finally could cope up with life. That is what I think depression is. It is extreme.

I think when some one is upset or feels depressed he or she should try to deviate mind by doing some good things.

  23. Hi,

Great article. The probelm with depression is that there are not many people who are trained to recognize the symptoms. Quite a few times the person himself/herself is not aware of the condition. People around may make inappropriate comments due to ignorance (sometimes even deliberately) which can have a disastrous impact on the depressed person.

  24. Good article Karl. But lets me honest we all go through little phases of depression whether we know it or not. One thing which i usually do when i feel low is that i read self help books.Listening to soothing music also relaxes the mind.
