What is Self esteem exactly?

As part of running my various website about self esteem and depression I get many questions daily. It is amazing how I am able to help people from all over the world with just a few words in an email which I can write quickly. I really feel I am contributing and doing something positive.

Anyway, here's today's question:

"What is self esteem really?"

And here is my brief answer, please add your answer below in the comments section, love to hear how you would define self esteem.

Self esteem is:

"the value you put on yourself as a person. It is how you see yourself, do you have a lot of positive ideas about who you are and what you can offer to the world or do you think of yourself negatively? Low self esteem is when you don't like who you are and think you are worthless or a failure so high self esteem would be believing the opposite and feeling confident about YOU."

  1. Karl, don't you think education ,sometimes, lowers our self esteem, cuz we risk losing so much more as compared to someone who is one against nothing

  3. I would say no one is perfect and no one has loads of self esteem to achieve anything. Everyone at sometime fall to low self esteem. It is same for me too sometimes am very confident and work around talk to people and complete my work so confidently but other times i feel so low in self esteem that at some time i was great at that work now feel fear to do that. So what i do is, i just keep thinking positive. I realized positive thinking is much powerful tool in our body system. It just changes the all scenario.

  4. I agree that high self esteem would be thinking positively about yourself and low self esteem would be thinking negatively of yourself, but more specifically it seems like high self esteem is recognition of positively qualities that one actually has and realizing our inherent worth and value to each other. If a person thinks highly of themselves for no reason or say they possess a skill or quality they do not really have, this is sometimes just called over-confidence or narcissism.
